日本語 132 Review L. 5-6

Grammar I: この___、その___、あの___どの___

Adds to our KO, SO, A, DO List

But these words are different; they must be followed by a Noun so you are saying

This___, or That___ e.g.

この本、その山、あの川, その人、あの学生、その先生

Other demonstratives like これ=already contain a Noun so it can be used on its own and means

"This thing" これは___です。

That's why we can never say

これ本、それ山 or あれ学校

And remember, これ、それ、あれ、どれ cannot be used for people so it will always be:

この人、その人、あの人

Likewise, ここ、そこ、あそこ、どこ= are about places; they already mean "this place, that place" as they are so we could NEVER have something like:

ここ カフェ, そこ川 or あそこ デパート

But rather it would be そのカフェ or その川

or あのデパート

So,"this room" = この へや

"that picture" = その え

"that photograph" = その しゃしん

"that car over there" = あの くるま

You try:

This university

wu

That professor huike

That Dog over there dog

This Cat cat

That Convenience Store kon

This Department Store dept

That Hospital hosp over there

This classroom: class

That Bike over there bike

That clock tokei

That TV over there tv ...is old

This Coffee sta... is expensive!

See Activity 1 p. 180

1、ひろい へや

2、大きい き

3、新しい つくえ

4、りっぱな テレビ

5、古い とけい

6、大きい いぬ

This is where we picked up all of out "Location Words" On top of, underneath, next to, adjacent to, on the right, left, etc.

See L. 5 pp. 182-187

上 = above, on top of

上 = above, on top of

中 = inside

そと = outside

うしろ = behend

まえ = in front of

みぎ = to the Right

ひだり = to the Left

となり = next to, same category

L. 6

I. Particles と and に

Grammar I has Two Parts

First Part: Use of Particles と and に

A. と can mean "with, together with"

友だち と べんきょう しました

= I studied with my friend

田中さん と えいが を  見ました

= I watched a movie with Tanaka-san

Remember: with the verb 会う we can have either particle

に = literally "to" or

the particle と = more like "with";

と is great for whne you "get together with" or "hang out with" your friends.  に is thought to me more unidirectional; と is more mutual, more bak and forth.

We also have a new Adverb in L. 6,

いっしょに which means "together with," so

友だち と いっしょに コーヒーを 飲みみました

I drank coffee with my friend

Also,

B. と can be used to link any two Nouns:

ペン と 本

学生 と 先生

コンピュータ と でんわ

日本語 の 本 と 中ごく語 の本

 But remember: we cannot join to ACTIONS with と. We cannot say

としょかん へ 行きました と べんきょうしました

What do we have to do? Use the て-form:

としょかん に 行って、べんきょうしました

Second Part of Gramar I:

Reviews the uses of に that we have learned so far:

1. Fixing an event or action in time

1:00 に 行きました = I went AT 1:00

土曜日 に 帰ります = I will return ON Saturday

So に has slightly different English equivalents depending on context: on, at, in, etc.

2. Indicating the Goal or Destination of Movement

学校 に 行きます

家 に 帰ります

Here, of course, へ is an alternative particle that can be used in place of に.

3. Locating Something (in Space)

Some Loc に Some Thing が あります

このへんに ぎんごうが あります

あそこに ビストロ が あります

ビストロは 学生会かん の 中に あります

BTW, these sentences tend to be "There is" sentences as opposed to just an IS sentence.

The room IS spacious = へやは ひろい です But

"There is a spacious room over there" would be:

あそこ に ひろい へや が あります

Some students still struggle a bit with where and when to place the に and the が.

It's pretty simple:

The が goes with the Thing we are Locating and the に goes with the Place where we are Locating it.

In Some Loc に Some Thing が あります

この へん に ぎんこう が あります

つくえの 上 に コンピュータ が あります

キャンパス に 学食 が あります

So the Word order goes:

Loc に Something が あります

BUT, we don't always need both elements in every utterance, right? Especially if you are asked where something is Located:

X は どこ に ありますか

You just put your answer with the Location, and put it right where the どこ was in the question and that's your answer.

You do not have to re-mention the thing we are talking about!!

Q.: 学食 は どこ に ありますか

A.: 学生かいかん の ちかく に あります

So, we don't have to repeat 学食

For an English Sentence like

"The student union is near/close to Goudy" we should write:

学生かいかん は ガウディ の ちかく に あります

学生かいかん は ガウディ の ちかく です

(but NEVER に です)

The New Part:

4. Now, we are adding a new wrinkle:

Using the Verb Stem + に + a Motion Verb

to indicate the Purpose of or the Reason for the Motion

= it is like "I go/went in order to...."

ひるごはんを 食べ に レストラン へ 行きました

I went to the restaurant IN ORDER TO eat dinner

食べ に =

the Verb stem of 食べます+ the particle に

The Stem of a Verb is the Pre-ます part. So it is easy; if you know the ます form, you know the Stem. For this PURPOSE pattern, all we need is the Stem.

In the case of る Verbs, the Stem and the Base、the Unchanging Part, are the Same.

Not so for う-Verbs

Motion Verbs, of course are the 3 Main Ones that express:

Go, Come, Return --

行きます、来ます、帰ります

II. Past of Adjectives

い-Adjectives:

Remove final い and add + かった

Perhaps it is because we CAN inflect い-Adjectives into Negative (く+ありません/ない) and into the past, that we have to express the past of Adjectives using かった instead of Adj でした.

So, we never say 新しい + でした;

it must be 新し+かった です

A few examples:

高い   たか + かった

大きい   大き + かった

小さい   小さ + かった

うれしい うれし + かった (was happy)

Here is another great reason to make a List of all of our い-Adjectives and practice saying just the Base (i.e., the Adjective without the final い) in order to get used to making that sound

高

古

新し

おもしろ

あかる

ひろ

せま

つまらな

Then you can add

く ない (neg)

かった (past)

くて (て form - See Grammar IV p. 234)

to that base so these words come smoothly and naturally to you.

Of course, いい is always our exception, right?

いいーーー>よい Drop い

よ + かった = It was good!

You will probably use that alot!

週末は どうでしたか? How was your weekend?

よかったです! = It was fine/great!

III. Using Verbs and Adjectives in てForm

Verbs て Form

Adj て Form = くて

In linking two Adjectives in くて form, we can link 2 attributes of things:

Big and expensive = 大きくて、高い です

Adj Base + くて

いそがし+くて、ひま じゃ なかったです。

高+くて、りっぱ です。

安す+くて、いいです。

If it's a な-Adj or a noun, just use で

休みで、たのしかった です

= Being it it was vacation, it was fun!

しずかで、入りました= Being that it was quiet, I went in

Also, Verbs て-form meaning "and"

ともだち と 会って、よかった です

あさごはんを 食べて、でかけました。

Grammar V Extending Invitations: V-ませんか?

いっしょに えいがを 見 に 行きませんか。

いっしょに テニスを しませんか。

いっしょに べんきょう しませんか。

Possible Responses:

いい ですね

ええ、ぜひ、、、しましょう

ええ、いい ですよ!

Or, if you cannot/do not want to...

すみません、ちょっと ようじが あって

ようじが あります = I have something I need to do, an obligation

すみません、ちょっと つごうが わるくて

= Sorry, it's not really convenient....

すみません、ちょっと つごうが よくなくて

L. 7-10 that we covered this semester....

L. 7 X が 好き/きらい and Liking to DO things, too,

X を するのが 好き/きらい

Comparatives and Superlatives:

一番___好き、高い、おもしとい、いい

A の方が B より ___いい/きれい/高い/新しい

A と B と どちらの方うが____ですか

B の方が_____

Actions:

A を するのと Bを するのとどちらの方うが____ですか

Verb Plain form + ので= Reason....Result

 お金が ないので 行かないん です

What comes before the ので?

Verbs, Plain form so we had to learn all the V-Plain or Dictionary Forms in L. 7, plus the Plain Negative Form of verbs (食べないので, 帰らないで )、

い-Adjectives (高いので)

BUT with な Adjectives, we have to retain the な in front of the ので so it goes,

きれいなので = Because it's pretty

好きなので = Because I like it....

しずかなので = Because it's quiet....
